Outside Japan it's come to refer to glutinous rice balls filled with sweet fillings, commonly called daifuku mochi in Japan. Mochi are a festive food, eaten especially around New year and other holidays. Sweet filled mochi are priced for their unique springy texture, chewy bit and of course their yummy fillings!
